Secondhand Heaven
Maui's largest Thrift Shop
We offer housewares, linens, artwork, office supplies, books, arts’n’crafts, party and holiday supplies, clothing, CDs and DVDs, furniture, hardware, sports equipment, toys and puzzles, and a large selection of collectibles and gifts in the Boutique. All items for babies and toddlers - clothing, toys, books, furniture and accessories - are free.
The shop serves the Maui community with high quality, gently used merchandise at low prices. The revenue is used for the restoration and maintenance of the Makawao Union Church buildings, which are more than 115 years old.
Secondhand Heaven relies on an all-volunteer team to sort and price donations and keep the shelves stocked. If you’d like to volunteer for a shift just let one of us know when you visit our shop.
We’re open to the public on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 9 am to 2 pm. Join our Facebook group to keep up-to-date on sales, promotions and new donations.

FAQs
-
To reflect God's love for our friends and neighbors by providing low-cost, high-quality goods in a respectful manner that acknowledges the worth and preserves the dignity of all persons; and to actively encourage beneficial environmental stewardship by keeping good, usable materials out of the landfill and putting them in the hands of people who can use them; and to maintain the historic buildings of Makawao Union Church, allowing us to extend our outreach to the community.
-
Every penny in revenue goes to maintaining, repairing, and preserving the historic church buildings. The Community Hall was built in 1914 and the big stone church in 1917. In 1985, the Board of Trustees applied for and received placement of Makawao Union Church on the Hawaii and National Registers of Historic Places.

We have a close relationship with a number of community agencies and organizations that we assist in providing items to people in need, whether through homelessness, domestic upheaval, or natural disasters.

That's all it took to create the magical place known as Secondhand Heaven, Maui's largest thrift shop, located at Makawao Union Church. Three church members - Shaun Lyons, Richard Rose and Joy Webster - planned the origins of the shop, from the layout of clothing racks to the policies covering everything from merchandise returns to pets-on-leashes.
We grew... and we keep on growing!
Secondhand Heaven opened on February 3, 2018, in a 500-square-foot room off the main hall. Donations slowly trickled in, a good thing because maneuvering 13 rolling clothes racks and coordinating with the regular hall renters required intricate choreography. It was soon obvious that more space was needed and that was right about the time the Sunday School decided they needed far less space. So we took over the room at the back of the stage and the Clothing Room bloomed (now the Backstage Room).
Other underused spaces were eyed and turned to our purposes. A large storage room was emptied, cleaned and became the Arts'n'Crafts Room (now the Corner Boutique). One wing of the stage, which for years housed risers and tables and ladders and junk, was cleaned out and transformed into the popular Book Wing (now the Entertainment Wing).
The “Covid Blessing”
And then Covid-19 hit the world and all group activities shut down, including the nightly dancing and meditation events that had filled the Community Hall for years. Starting in the Summer of 2020, Secondhand Heaven expanded into the hall, cautiously at first, not knowing how long we would have access to the space. Then we acquired the Aloha Room and the Sunday School room off the lanai, turning them into the Boutique (now Receiving).
Were we finished with expansion? Not by a long shot. Downstairs are two rooms we used for storage of the incoming donations and for cleaning and sorting. First one room became the Rummage Room and now the other room is finished. Combined, they make up the Bargain Basement - Home of the One-Dollar Clothes!
In four years, we grew from 500 square feet to 3500 square feet; from one small room housing everything to nine rooms on four levels, each room with its own theme.
